The African Deck – Playing Cards

This decolonised deck of playing cards was conceptualised and designed by Gillian Schutte and Sipho Singiswa in 2000.  The symbols in this African deck of playing cards have been chosen in the spirit of uBuntu. uBuntu (humanity) is the word used for the system of fairness and sharing inherent in African social and spiritual systems – a system in which no individual would go without as they are protected by the collective. The premise of this system is “I am because you are” meaning that as much as we are individual we are also collective and connected through our beingness.  Each suit is symbolic of an aspect of uBuntu and is explained in a leaflet inside the box.

This spirit of uBuntu is being revived through the decolonisation project.
